| We anticipate that LTO 6 drives and LTO 6 Tape
media will be released in late 2012 or early 2012.
Once brought to market, the LTO-6
will be the sixth generation of LTO tape and will up the ante
with storage for 3.2TB of raw data, 8TB with 2.5:1 compression
and transfer rate of 210MB/Sec (this translates to 525MB/second
compressed). The impressive increase in tape density will be
achieved by utilizing a newly developed magnetic particle and
other key advances in manufacturing technology
IT managers currently employing
the LTO-5 with 1.5TB of raw data storage will surely be amazed
that the LTO-6 tapes will hold more than two times as much data.
Additionally, LTO-6 tape will feature a Linear Tape File System
(LTFS) that is currently utilized within the LTO-5. This makes
it easier to manage and maintain data than the LTO-4 and early
versions. There are more features to be announced for the LTO-6
in the coming days, as full specs aren’t yet available.
The LTO consortium (mentioned
above) is a group of companies that make up the Technology
Provider Companies (TPCs), which is diligently working to make
sure that tape lives on for years to come.
We anticipate having LTO 6
tapes from IBM, Sony, HP, Quantum, Fuji, TDK, Imation and
Maxell.
