When should I use the LTO Cleaning Tape Cartridge?  The LTO Ultrium Universal Cleaning Cartridge is designed specifically for use in all LTO Ultrium 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 drives and is compatible with libraries designed for LTO Ultrium 1, 2,  4 and 5 drives. The Ultrium system is based on the industry’s first open data storage platform. The LTO consortium—comprised of drive manufacturers HP, IBM and Quantum—developed this technology to meet the increased midrange and enterprise storage demands analysts predict over the next decades.  LTO Ultrium Universal Cleaning Cartridge will provide up to 50 cleanings per cartridge, as specified by the drive.  On most LTO Tape drives, the drive will indicate if cleaning is required by continuous illumination of an external light or symbol. Some environments may cause the drive to require a more regimented cleaning schedule.
